British Columbia is widely recognized as having some of the best educational environments in Canada, and Powell River is no different. The youth of Powell River have access to an extensive array of options and innovative approaches when it comes to education. Through partnerships with private sector companies, Powell River offers unique programs for their students, which helps to solidify long term employment in the region.

Public School

Powell River’s education system is represented by School District 47. The public education system is responsible for providing primary and secondary education to the roughly 2,100 students within their boundaries. There are six elementary schools (grades K-7), one secondary school (grades 8-12), as well as various alternate schools and distributed learning programs to support home school initiatives. A French immersion program is available at James Thomson Elementary.

Post-Secondary

Vancouver Island University (VIU) has a campus in Powell River which strives to be a dynamic and diverse educational organization, dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning, service and research. VIU at Powell River is a year-round campus offering a variety of programs relevant to those living in the community. The programs are specifically designed to aid community development, and the institution actively monitors their offerings to expand their services to match the needs of their students.
